VIRTUAL EDUCATION!

A tiny video camera gives you a "Virtual Education" as it lets you see the inside of your mouth like you’ve never seen it before!

The other day a cute little girl came in for a check up. When we looked in her chart, we discovered that several cavities had been found a year ago (at her last check up). The parents had not kept their appointment to have their daughter’s teeth filled! Now the cavities had grown much larger and were going to be more expensive and possibly more uncomfortable to fill.

It turned out that her parents just didn’t realize how important it was to treat their daughter’s dental disease! This example illustrates one of our great frustrations; to see a person who has serious dental problems and then to be unable to convince them to have treatment! They eventually will come in (often when they are in pain) but now things are much worse and the treatment may be more uncomfortable and expensive e

We have always felt that if YOU could see what WE see in your mouth, you wouldn’t put things off! In other words, "Seeing is believing." That is why we have been using intra-oral slide photography for years. But now there is something better—intraoral video.

In Intra-oral video, we use a miniature video camera to view the teeth and oral tissues inside your mouth. The video camera is about as big around as your finger and the length of a pencil. It is attached to a cable that goes to an electronic box that holds a fiber optic light source. The image that the camera produces can be viewed on a monitor or the VR glasses.

The VR glasses make it possible for you to watch "live" as we look in your mouth. Now, when we see decay or a cracked filling or other dental disease, you can see it as well as we can! It is this instant, "live" feature that makes intra-oral video so helpful. We don’t have to wait for slides to come back, we can show you right here, right now.

In the case I was talking about, we took a few minutes to show the child and grandpa what the cavity looked like in the little girl’s mouth. Then we used the camera’s video printer to create a holograph that they could take home for mom and dad to see. The child was back a few days later to have the cavities filled! Seeing is believing!

We have especially been enjoying the ability to provide entertainment to our patients and then to easily show them things in their mouth during treatment. Recently, we were filling a patient’s tooth while he was watching a National Geographic video about Hawaii. We noticed that another tooth had been diagnosed for a crown because of a defective filling but our patient had been postponing it. We stopped the video and switched over to the lntraoral Camera and showed our patient the tooth on the VR glasses ~ Now that he has seen it with his own eyes, he will probably be back soon to have it restored.

Sometimes, how ever, dental disease and its treatment can be more complicated and require more explanation. We have many excellent video tapes on dental disease and treatment that we could show our patients but we seldom do. Why? Because it is hard to find the time - both for us and for you.

The VR glasses make it possible for us to show you a video tape explaining your dental disease and treatment DURING your appointment! Now we can use your actual treatment time to better educate you about your disease or treatment. Learn more about gum disease, implants, tooth whitening, prevention of dental disease, and many more topics. In other words, come to our office and get a "Virtual Education"!
