VIRTUAL DISTRACTION I have to admit that I am really excited about this new addition to our office. Virtual Reality (VR) glasses open whole new worlds for our patients. The worlds of relaxing entertainment, education, and dental understanding are now available during your dental appointment. I just cant wait to show you! VR glasses are made by Virtual i-O, a Seattle, Washington company. They are similar to a high-tech consumer version and to the type of headsets used for three-dimensional, virtual-reality games at some video arcades. The VR glasses consist of two tiny, liquid crystal color screens mounted horizontally above the eye brows that are viewed through prisms that redirect the image into the eyes, Hi Fi headphones are built into the glasses for great sound. The VR glasses are light weight and quite comfortable and even designed so that you can wear "regular" glasses with them if you need to. But the actual experiences of our 1st patients to use VR glasses are their best endorsement. Tom Martinek, came in for two new crowns. Like many of our patients, Tom uses nitrous oxide to make it easier to have an injection of local anesthetic but today we had Tom put on the VR glasses for the remainder of the appointment. We started a National Geographic video on Hawaii and began Toms treatment As Tom looked into the glasses, he said, This is like sitting in a movie theater about 15 rows back!" Later Tom said, "I actually enjoyed going to the dentist! It was fun and I even look forward to my next visit!" A few weeks ago a cute little girl, named Daniell Kimbrel, came in for her very first filling. We put the VR glasses on Daniell and Kathy, her mom, was amazed as her little 5 year old remained absolutely still while we performed her dental treatment. I just saw Kathy again the other day and she said, "Daniell is still talking about how much fun it was to see the dentist." Am I excited about VR glasses? You bet I am, because we can make dentistry even more comfortable and even fun. But there are other reasons too; read the article inside entitled "Virtual Education" to find out what they are! |
