Vicodin and Its Dangers:

The following is an article from the Orange County Register that warns us to be careful in the use of Vicodin.  Like most drugs, if Vicodin is used in moderation, it can be helpful, when it is abused in can be HELL!

The drug that killed In-N-Out [In-N-Out Burger Chain] "CEO"  H. Guy Snyder is a semisynthetic narcotic similar to codeine, but three times more powerful and with a higher addiction potential.

Hydrocodone bitartrate is commonly prescribed as a painkiller under the trade name Vicodin, and also replaces codeine in many prescription cough medicines.

Snyder may have had the drug through a prescription, either because of joint pain due to old injuries or for treatment of pneumonia he suffered last year, but medical journals caution against prescribing hydrocodone to patients with heart disease.

According to a Los Angeles County coroner's report, Snyder had suffered a heart attack in 1996 and had an enlarged heart.

Vicodin, classed as a Schedule C narcotic, is prescribed to people in all walks of life. However, heroin addicts and others with a strong addiction to opiates have fostered a black market in the drug, which can ease withdrawal symptoms.

Like all narcotics, hydrocodone can impair breathing in high doses, leading to coma, cardiac arrest and death in severe cases. ©

A Note from Dr. Wilson:  I am not opposed to prescribing Vicodin when it is needed in cases of severe pain but I hope you will understand I that am very careful and conservative in prescribing it.  Please do not be offended if I ask questions and am very guarded in its use.  As this article reveals, Vicodin can be a dangerous drug if used for any extended period of time.
