Mission Trip to the Island of Roatan off the coast of Honduras - July 2002
by Charles Wilson DDS
I and my wife, Joanne, along with Dr Don Downs and his wife Darlene spent a
week off the southern tip of the Island of Roatan on the smaller island of
Helene performing dentistry at the Medical/Dental Clinic of Alternative
Missions.
The people of Helene are descendants of black slaves from Africa. They
are an unusual people group because they speak English while all the communities
around them speak Spanish. This is because the island of Roatan was
previously an English possession. It is now part of the country of
Honduras which is Spanish speaking.
Like many underdeveloped and poor areas, the Island of Helene off the tip of
Roatan lacks dental treatment. Unfortunately, they have an abundance of
all the junk foods that cause dental disease. The result is terrible
dental decay and gum disease that causes much pain and suffering. Helene's
governing country of Honduras has limited dental treatment for its own people
and is unable to help. The countries surrounding Honduras are not much
better off. As a result, Christians in the USA have stepped in to
help. There are now several dentists who come regularly to help the people
of Helene.
The pictures that follow show our team as we minister to the people of
Helene.
Here I am waving from the steps and happy because we arrived safely on a
"modern" aircraft!
Under construction, more pictures to come.....
