Fluoride Tablets May No

Longer Be Necessary...

We recommend to our patients that they
discontinue Dietary Fluoride Supplement Tablets.

A recent study in the Journal of the California Dental Association indicates that Fluoride levels in local water supplies may be at high enough levels that dietary Fluoride supplement tablets’ are no longer recommended.
What are dietary Fluoride supplement tablets?
This is a pill that your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe that has fluoride in it to make your child’s teeth more resistant to cavities. It is valuable only for children under 12 who have teeth still forming in their jaws.

Do you still recommend topical Fluoride treatments for children in the dental office? YES!! Topical Fluoride treatments continue to be a highly successful way of reducing cavities in children.  The reason that topical fluoride treatments are recommended is that studies have shown that such treatments reduce cavities to an even lower level than just dietary fluoride by itself.  Dietary fluoride causes fluoride to be incorporated into the tooth enamel.   Topical fluoride is absorped onto the tooth enamel surface and makes the enamel even less prone to decay.

Are toothpastes with Fluoride still a good idea? YES!!

Toothpastes with Fluoride are very helpful in preventing cavities.

What if my child gets cavities very easily -is there anything I can do? YES! We can provide you with Gelkam (a prescription topical fluoride gel) for your child to brush on the teeth. You can also purchase non-prescription, topical Fluoride rinses at your drug store. Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle.
