Study shows Custom-fitted Mouthguards are preferred

According to a study published in the August issue of the Journal of the American Dental Assn., young athletes preferred Custom-fitted Mouthguards...

QUESTION: What is a Custom-fitted Mouthguard?

Custom fitted mouthguards are made from impressions taken by your dentist. The mouthguards are made of a soft rubber material that is molded to cover the teeth.

QUESTION: What are "boil and bite" (self-adapted) mouthguards? They are store bought and made by boiling the mouthguard in water and then biting into the warm plastic. According to a study published in the August. 1994 issue of the Journal of the Amen can Dental Assn.. "Young athletes preferred custom-fitted guards for their comfort and wearability to the store bought ‘boil & bite’ types." Both types of mouthguards. however, help reduce the chance that an athlete will sustain an injury to the teeth and lips.

QUESTION: Why don’t more athletes have the custom-fitted type? Cost is often the problem. Our normal fee is $75 (and it only covers our costs!). But there is a solution. If we could do a team of players we could use an "assembly line" approach and cut costs considerably and reduce the fee by 50% to $37 ! We would need to schedule 4 or more players together. So, ATTENTION coaches or parents, if you are interested, give us a call!
